![]() Therefore, I recommend starting at 3rd Level, as this is when players start being able to take a few hits in combat.įull disclaimer, this is not an optional rule I have actually had the chance to play with yet. And dying to a Giant Rat at 1st Level is just… Anticlimactic. 12 damage is enough to down any 1st Level character bar some martial characters with high CON modifiers. If that same Giant Rat then crits… Well, that’s a minimum of 6 damage, all the way up to 12. Just this alone, if it rolls maximum damage, would be able to down a 1st Level Wizard or Sorcerer in one single attack, assuming no CON modifiers. Let’s run the maths for a second – A Giant Rat, a fairly common and stereotypical enemy, deals 1d4+2 damage on an attack. The secondary reason is an aspect that for some is fun, but for me is just annoying, and that is how incredibly squishy player characters are at 1st and 2nd Level. The primary reason is simply that it grants immediate access to some of the more fun parts of a player’s class and subclass right from the start! This allows for both more interesting gameplay right away, but also allows a little more flexibility with regards to player backstories! ![]() Unless your players are completely new, in which case I would definitely recommend starting at Level 1, I would highly recommend starting your characters at Level 3! This serves multiple purposes. I lean quite heavily on the rules, but as this article shows, I’m not afraid to adjust them to suit the campaign I want to run! But again, keep in mind that everything here is my personal opinion and reasoning, if you do not believe that these rules would be a good fit for your campaign, by all means, do it however you want! These are simply a starting point suggestion! I’m what many would call a forever-GM, but rest assured, I enjoy every minute of it, and wouldn’t have it any other way. Since this is an opinion piece, I figure it’s relevant to mention a bit about me: I’ve been playing TTRPG’s for around 6 years, and been heavily invested for around 3 years. I will also address a few official optional rule choices. In this short write-up, I will describe the rule tweaks, and explain my motivation for applying them. While LoreMaster.io is a system-agnostic software, we as players tend to play in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition for our TTRPG of choice! Now, the base set of rules is fairly decent, but there are many simple tweaks that I as Game Master often apply to my games, to make it more fun for both players and GM’s.

![]() For example, swings may be too close together, or not have enough clearance behind and in front of the set. And, if the equipment is older, it may not come with modern safety features or standards. Remember, maintenance is not always required after a playground is installed. You can also quiz the kids with random questions each day, before they go out the door for playtime. You can do this with photographs, like flashcards. But our suggestion is to teach them to the group beforehand. Sometimes, the above pointers can be taught to daycare kids while they’re on the playground, as teachable moments. Kids need to be taught that these can be dangerous to their health it won’t come naturally to their logic. This also applies to trash, dead animals, and the like. Kids should be ultra sensitive to not touch these things. This is gross, but sometimes things like used condoms, and those needles we mentioned above, are left on playgrounds or their surrounding fields. ‘Dirty’ things that don’t belong on the playground. This includes needles, broken glass, nails or other objects left behind by irresponsible citizens (yes, we said it!). Sharp objects that don’t belong on the playground. For wood parts of a playground, make sure there are no breakages that could cause splinters or cuts. Balls, jump ropes and toy cars can be real hazards in those small climbing spaces, especially with elevated openings that can just ‘scream’ for an unintentional fall. And, while rocks, sticks and toys may be part of the playground scene, make sure kids know they shouldn’t be in the way, especially on slides, or places they can trip. Tripping, bruising and cutting hazards. ![]() Otherwise, honestly, we’d say to just avoid the playground all together. Pea gravel, wood chips or other synthetic material should be used. Grass or dirt are too hard for potential playground falls. For that, it should be at least 10 – 12 inches thick, and extend at least 6 feet around the playground equipment. The ‘padding’ on the ground should not only be made of a soft material, it should also absorb the impact of the fall. This is the most serious cause of injury on a playground. Hard foundations or lack of soft cushioning on the ground.Always touch metal slides and rails softly before letting them burn you. Sometimes, playground equipment made of metal, or even plastic, can get hot in the summer. The kids should know not to step on the very wet playgrounds, however tempting it may be! Wet, slippery surfaces, such as on the slide (especially since kids like climbing up them). If they see a bar that isn’t tightly screwed in, or a swing hook or pole leg that looks wobbly, they should tell their teacher or parent right away, and ask the other kids not to go near that equipment. But, in general, kids should be attuned to: The type of instruction will vary depending on the age group of the daycare kids you’re teaching about playground safety. The good news is that kids pick up facts pretty quickly, and some of them (depending on personalities) like to point out the ‘rules’ too! Before heading to the playground, daycare educators should be conversing with kids about this issue (like, during circle time, for instance). So, one way to handle this is to make sure that during play, kids are aware of safety standards. And, we’re not exactly going to go through a 20-point-checklist before touching playground equipment either (though, we technically should, and would encourage it). But if we’re honest, we mostly assume the playground is safe. The adults ‘in charge’ usually notice ‘big’ things, like maybe a wet, slippery slide. It’s easy to get excited when arriving at a playground, and to charge ahead and get playing right away. It’s important that adults and kids alike learn to keep their eyes open for any potential hazards on a playground. Teach kids and caregivers to scout their play area and playground equipment Below we’ll outline some of the major ways to teach playground safety at daycare. This applies to early childhood educators and caregivers supervising children too. So, in short, it’s important that we keep reminding our daycare kids to be safe on the playground. The good news is that bigger injuries (such as head injuries and open wounds) were reduced when playgrounds got safer, and more people began paying attention to playground safety rules. Most of these injuries happen to kids aged 5 to 9, and most are from falling, which result in fractures. ![]() While that’s not a staggering statistic, no parent wants their child to be part of that 29,000. According to the The Canadian Paediatric Society, 29,000 children up to age 15 go to the emergency room for playground injuries. Injuries on playgrounds are a serious issue. The Duc de Blangis and his brother the Bishop of X***, each of whom had thuswise amassed immense fortunes, are in themselves solid proof that, like the others, the nobility neglected no opportunities to take this road to wealth. One must not suppose that it was exclusively the low-born and vulgar sort which did this swindling gentlemen of the highest note led the pack. It was toward the close of this period, and not long before the Regent sought, by means of the famous tribunal which goes under the name of the Chambre de Justice, to flush this multitude of traffickers, that four of them conceived the idea for the singular revels whereof we are going to give an account. The end of this so very sublime reign was perhaps one of the periods in the history of the French Empire when one saw the emergence of the greatest number of these mysterious fortunes whose origins are as obscure as the lust and debauchery that accompany them. The extensive wars wherewith Louis XIV was burdened during his reign, while draining the State's treasury and exhausting the substance of the people, none the less contained the secret that led to the prosperity of a swarm of those bloodsuckers who are always on the watch for public calamities, which, instead of appeasing, they promote or invent so as, precisely, to be able to profit from them the more advantageously. ![]() The original scroll manuscript of the Marquis de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom Introduction Depending on how quickly the player beats the game, the song can actually be longer than the total playtime.Marquis de Sade, The 120 Days of Sodom (1785), translated by Richard Seaver and Austryn Wainhouse. The first two nights were rehearsal nights at the Full Cast office. At that time, we lived in a one-room studio apartment with a kitchenette-I didn’t realize that having a full kitchen with a large refrigerator would drive Tim a little crazy. All Tim cared about was finding a grocery store so he could buy things for the refrigerator. All I cared about that first night was going to bed. When Bruce is on the move, he leaves little more than a blur behind.įull Cast put us up in a suite hotel, which is more like an apartment building than a hotel: the residents get a kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom. Since Bruce is that way most of the time, I don’t know why I didn’t expect it from him as a driver, too. (We happen to have a record for getting lost at least once on any trip, and we work hard to maintain it.) Driving behind “Lead Foot Coville,” as Tim promptly named him, was an exercise in the art of keeping up. We followed Bruce and his family back to Syracuse, priding ourselves on getting lost only twice. Our journey began in Framingham, Massachusetts, the Sunday after the close of the Boskone science fiction convention. If Tim got a tiny part, he was going to sulk. We, however, were just there that first year to do one book. There’s always the chance for a big part in the next production. It’s different when you’re in a company like our radio company or like Full Cast. Like most actors, he believes the wise old saying about “there are no small parts, only small actors” is a keg of crocodile puckey. You see, my beloved Spouse Creature was an actor before and at the same time he was a radio actor. Bruce had said he’d cast Tim in something, since Tim knows my characters and stories as well as I do, if not better (I forget a lot of details in the Chase for the Next Book), but we weren’t sure how much he’d be able to use Tim. I was also nervous on my own behalf-I would be the narrator, and I hadn’t been a voice actor in over a decade-and that of my husband Tim. (He and his company had to work with a risk in my case, the possibility that, because I’d done audio productions before, I might try to impose my views on their actors and working style.) (Bruce would find out later that, rather than think I would tell them how to do it right, I was yelping, “No responsibility! Whee!”) But I didn’t know if he would have people who would match what I’d had in mind as I wrote, and I wouldn’t be directing them Bruce would. ![]() I knew that Bruce had done full cast books for years with Listening Library, before it was bought by Random House, and now with the Full Cast Audio company. Of course, that was what I’d learned of voice productions during the 1980s, when I chose the actors who performed my audio plays, to the point of writing parts with particular actors in mind. ![]() ![]() With audio productions, though, the right actor can give the listener’s imagination an extra hook on which to hang her/his imagination, the extra boost that makes the book live in the listener’s mind. With movies and television, the studio’s choice of actors and visual details never quite matches the way anyone, particularly the author, imagined the story. ![]() Because of my background in doing radio during the 1980s, I was thrilled to have the chance to get in front of a microphone again and to hear my characters given life by a group of good actors. In 2001 or 2002, I forget which, my friend and fellow writer Bruce Coville approached me about recording my Circle of Magic quartet with his new audio book company, Full Cast Audio.
